Robert Clatworthy - Head - bronze
Robert Clatworthy is best known as a sculptor, but he produced paintings throughout his career. In the 1990s he concentrated entirely on painting.
Our next auction features a collection of his paintings from the 1990s onwards.
Clatworthy studied at the Chelsea and Slade Schools of Art.
He was a Henry Moore assistant in the early 1950s.
He exhibited with the Hanover Gallery in the 1950s and early 1960s, showing alongside Francis Bacon, Picasso and Giacometti, before moving to the Waddington Galleries in the mid-1960s.
He was, at the time, one of the youngest artists to become a Royal Academician at the age of 40 in 1968.
Public galleries holding his work include the Tate Gallery, V&A and Arts Council.
A book illustrating his sculpture and paintings was published by Sansom in 2012.
Our auction also includes some of his best sculptures, from a different collection.
